Understanding Oral Cysts and Tumours

Oral cysts and tumours can arise from various tissues in the mouth, including gums, tongue, cheeks, and jawbones. These abnormal growths may be painless at first, but early detection and treatment are essential for preventing complications. Cysts are typically fluid-filled sacs, while tumours can be benign or malignant growths

Causes

  • Genetic factors – Inherited conditions can increase susceptibility to cysts and tumours.
  • Chronic irritation – Poor-fitting dentures or prolonged tobacco use can cause tissue changes.
  • Infections – Bacterial or viral infections, such as herpes, can contribute to growths.
  • Injury – Oral trauma can lead to cyst formation or tissue changes over time.
  • Underlying health conditions – Certain systemic diseases increase the likelihood of oral lesions

Symptoms

  • Painless lump or swelling in the mouth or jaw
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Persistent sore or ulcer
  • Numbness or tingling in the face or mouth
  • Jaw pain or pressure
  • Changes in voice or speech
  • Bleeding or drainage from the cyst

Treatment Options

  • Surgical removal – For most cysts and benign tumours, surgery is the primary option.
  • Biopsy – A sample of the growth may be taken for pathological examination.
  • Radiotherapy – For malignant tumours, radiation is often used alongside surgery.
  • Reconstruction – Post-surgical reconstruction may be necessary to restore aesthetics and function.
  • Regular follow-up – Monitoring ensures the condition does not recur.

At Singh Cancer Maxillofacial and Dental Centre, our priority is to provide safe, effective, and patient-focused treatment for oral cysts and tumours, ensuring the highest standard of care.
