What is Implant Uncover?

Implant uncovering is a dental procedure performed to expose the dental implant that has been placed beneath the gum tissue. This step is essential in the dental implant process, allowing for the attachment of the healing cap, which facilitates the growth of gum tissue around the implant. The uncovering procedure is typically a minor surgical intervention.

Causes for Implant Uncovering

Dental implants are often placed beneath the gum line to allow for osseointegration, a process where the bone grows around the implant, ensuring stability. After a period of healing, uncovering is necessary to:

  1. Enable Final Restoration: Prepare the implant for the final restoration, such as a crown.
  2. Address Delayed Healing: If there is excessive gum tissue or if the healing process takes longer than expected, uncovering may be required.

Symptoms Indicating Need for Uncovering

Patients may not experience symptoms prior to uncovering; however, signs indicating a need for the procedure include:

  • Prolonged swelling or discomfort in the area surrounding the implant.
  • A feeling of pressure or fullness beneath the gum tissue.
  • Difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene due to excessive gum coverage.

Treatment Process

The implant uncovering procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. Anesthesia: Local anaesthesia is administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.
  2. Incision: A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the implant.
  3. Placement of Healing Cap: A healing cap is placed over the implant, allowing for the gum tissue to heal properly around it.

Post-procedure, patients are usually advised on care instructions to promote healing and ensure the success of the implant restoration process.
