Flap Surgery for Gum Disease

Flap surgery is a common dental procedure used to treat severe gum disease (periodontitis). This surgical method involves lifting the gums to remove plaque and tartar that has accumulated in deep pockets beneath the gum line. The procedure helps to reduce inflammation, control infection, and promote gum healing by allowing better access to clean the roots of the teeth.

Causes

Flap surgery is typically required when non-surgical treatments for gum disease, such as scaling and root planing, are insufficient. Common causes of gum disease include:

  • Poor oral hygiene, leading to plaque build-up
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Diabetes or other health conditions that weaken the immune system
  • Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or menopause
  • Genetic predisposition to gum disease

Symptoms

Patients who may need flap surgery usually exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
  • Deep pockets forming between the teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth or changes in bite alignment
  • Gum recession or visible root surfaces
  • Pain when chewing or increased tooth sensitivity

Treatment Options

Flap surgery typically involves the following steps:

  1. Anaesthesia – Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the area being treated.
  2. Lifting the Flap – The dentist or periodontist will gently lift the gum tissue to expose the roots and underlying bone.
  3. Cleaning – The roots of the teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove plaque, tartar, and infected tissue.
  4. Reshaping Bone – If necessary, the bone is reshaped or smoothed to minimise future pocket formation.
  5. Closing the Flap – The gum is stitched back into place, and the area is allowed to heal.

Flap surgery helps prevent further damage to the gums and bone, ultimately saving teeth and improving oral health.
